Chapter 1: In the Beginning…

Canine Bible Chapter 1.jpg

Hello! Welcome to my blog: The Canine Bible where I translate the book of Genesis as if God is humanity and humanity are dogs. I find our pets tend to mirror us in both good ways and bad. I hope in reflecting this foundational piece of literature back to us, we can see more clearly what the Bible says. I’d love to hear your questions and thoughts! If you like what you are reading, check out my zines. Some of these chapters are illustrated!

In the beginning, the gods created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was without form and darkness hovered over the surface of the deep.

And the gods said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. The gods declared the light good and they separated themselves from the darkness. The gods called the light “fire” and there was evening and there was morning – the first age.

Then the gods said, “Let there be an expanse between waters and separate the water we drink from the water we bare.” And so the gods separated the waters. The water they drank they called good and the water they bore they called bad. And there was evening and there was morning - the second age.

And then the gods said, “Let us gather under the sky and be of one place where the dry ground is firm.” They called this place “home”. They dug at the ground and made sweet smelling plants appear. The gods saw that this was good. And there was evening and there was morning - the third age.

Then the gods said, “Let there be lights in the sky that defy all time and seasons. Let these lights give light to the earth always and never disappear.” And it was so. The gods declared that this was good. And there was morning and there was evening - the fourth age.

Then the gods said, “Let us pull out all the living creatures of the waters and feast on their flesh.” So the gods hunted the waters and ate their fill. The gods then said, “Let us catch the winged beasts that fly in the air and taste every kind.” So the gods hunted the sky and feasted again. The gods found many to be good and the gods blessed them and said “Be fruitful and multiply.” Those of good taste increased all over the earth. And there was evening and there was morning - the fifth age.

And the gods said, “Let us feast on all living creatures: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. The gods ate every living creature, each according to its kind, and the gods saw that it was good.

Then the gods said, “Let us form a creature to feast in our likeness. Let them feast over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and all the livestock and let them help us rule over them.” So the gods formed the wolf into their own image, in the image of the gods, they created them.

The gods blessed them and said “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Feast on the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and on every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Then the gods said, “You will feast in our halls and taste every flavor we have created. All the beasts of the sea and of the air and of the land we will give to you for food.” And it was so.

And the gods saw all they had made and it was very good. There was evening and there was morning - the sixth age.

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all of their vast array. By the seventh age the gods had finished the work they had been doing; so in the seventh age the gods rested from all their work. And the gods blessed the seventh age because they rested from all they had done. But there was no evening and no morning as this is the current age.
